About the Student National Dental Association (SNDA)
What is the Student National Dental Association (SNDA)? Well, if the SNDA was a person attending a university, it would declare a major in Diversity/Community Service and a minor in African American Culture. The Student National Dental Association is an organization that is all about the “inclusive we.” We accept members of all races, creeds, colors, and religions. Our goal is to improve the oral health care within our communities and abroad. Our dedication is to the advancement of students within the field of dentistry. SNDA has and continues to provide proper oral hygiene education through various outreach efforts and an increase the access to care within communities, with emphasis on the minorities and the undeserved. The SNDA has had a long-standing goal for over 40 years to promote, aid and support the academic and social environment of minority students. We are always excited to have more members dedicated to community improvement!

About the Speaker
Steven Kessel, Ph.D. is the Shedd Aquarium’s Director of Marine Research in the Daniel P. Haerther Center for Conservation and Research. Dr. Kessel oversees a suite of marine conservation research projects aimed at protecting commercially important Caribbean species, such as endangered Nassau grouper and threatened queen conch.
Dr. Kessel has worked extensively with a wide variety of species and has a well-established reputation as a conservation scientist. His research complements the existing conservation portfolio at Shedd, which is intended to advance management and protect imperiled aquatic species across the globe.
In addition to overseeing Shedd’s existing conservation research projects in The Bahamas, Kessel will also launch his own original research project to better understand Caribbean region shark species and how to protect them from further decline. Previously, Kessel has led and assisted with research projects studying lemon sharks, Red Sea sharks and manta rays, and has aided in the development of conservation management programs for various species.

The business of oral health is changing. Will you be ready? In this oral health innovation seminar, Steven Pollock, the President and CEO of DentaQuest, the nation’s leading purpose-driven oral health organization, will discuss the changing oral health business, and how it will you as an oral health professional.
February 13, Wednesday, 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm
The pace of change in the healthcare industry is the fastest it’s been in decades, and dentistry is no exception. The highly fragmented and siloed dental care and finance system is ripe for disruption. The industry is being purposefully disrupted by significant inflow of capital, novel technology, workforce and other regulatory reforms, and changing consumer preferences. Accelerated consolidation and care delivery disruptions are aiming to create a more accessible, integrated, consumer oriented, and value-driven model.
One example of this transformation is “Preventistry”, which:
- Refocuses oral care on prevention
- Pays for value and outcomes, not volume of services
- Advocates for greater access in multiple venues where people are, and
- Invests in innovations and technologies that improve consumer health and experience
To effect this transformation will require a new thinking in business strategy and corporate philanthropy, putting business performance and social impact on the same footing. In the healthcare industry that’s inherently social and local, this double bottom line approach is both socially responsible and offers a unique, sustainable and credible competitive edge.
