Assistant Professor Tenure/Tenure Track
Department of Oral and Maxillofacial SurgeryThe Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the College of Dentistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking applications for a 12-month, Tenure/Tenure Track, faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor.
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is responsible for the didactic and clinical instruction in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Local Anesthesia and Pain Control for the undergraduate dental students, and has a full- and expanded-scope postgraduate residency training program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for both 48 months (OMFS Certificate only program) and 72 months (OMFS-MD-integrated program). There is ample exposure to Head and Neck Oncology as well as Facial Aesthetic Surgery. The Department is fully committed to patient care, student and resident education, service to the University, the community, and the profession, continuing dental and medical education, and scientific research and publication.
The Assistant Professor will have clinical, research, teaching and service obligations. These responsibilities include direct and indirect involvement in the post-doctoral and pre-doctoral specialty educational programs for DMD and Advanced Standing students, as well as postgraduate residents in the College of Dentistry’s Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). The programmatic responsibilities include didactic, laboratory, clinical and patient care courses and other assignments for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). Participate in multidisciplinary management of Head and Neck Cancer patients. The Assistant Professor of OMFS shall work with the OMFS Department Head and be responsible for development of the program curriculum, staff development and administrative needs of the pre-doctoral and post-doctoral Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinical and educational programs.
Minimum qualifications include, Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)/Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or its equivalent and/or a doctorate in related healthcare professions, educational discipline or clinical sciences. Completion of an ADA CODA – accredited advanced education program in OMFS. Eligible for dental (and medical, if applicable) licensure in the state of Illinois. OMFS Board Certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS).
Preferred qualifications include an additional MD degree, and fellowship training in head and neck oncology/microvascular reconstruction. ABOMS Diplomate status or educational qualification for such status. Experience in evidenced-based dentistry, curriculum development and practice management. Previous university-level teaching experience both at the pre-doctoral and postgraduate levels. Ability to mentor students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows. A strong record of peer-reviewed publications and research funding. Demonstrated experience of mentoring junior faculty, graduate and/or professional students. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience in fostering collaborative research between a dental school and outside entities (e.g. medical center) is desired.

The Dental Assistant II is utilized throughout UIC COD in the Department of Oral Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry (Prosthodontics). The Dental Assistant II duties include chair-side assistance during dental treatments or surgical procedures, prepares surgical suites, transfer instruments, retracts and evacuates the oral cavity, and assist on surgical cases with local anesthesia.
Candidates must be a high school graduate or equivalent and must have 12 months of work experiences in dental assisting, graduate from an accredited dental assisting school or have a current certification as a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) by the Dental Assisting National Board. The preferred candidate will be have surgical experiences, experience with four handed dentistry techniques, ability to multitask, and have good oral and written communication skills.
