Orthodontics Externships

The Department of Orthodontics at University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) was founded in 1929 with the goal of offering graduate study in Orthodontics. Since its inception it has been engaged in research, teaching and patient care. The graduates have contributed greatly to the development of dentistry’s oldest specialty. The Department occupies a 6000 square-foot location on the first floor of the College of Dentistry building located on the West Campus of UIC  with additional space as residents’ lab on the second floor. Facilities include a modern orthodontic clinic and clinical laboratory; reception and waiting area; computer, data processing, and microscopy laboratory; the Brodie Library; orthodontic technique laboratory for photography, appliance construction and plaster work; seminar room; Ricketts Research and Conference Facility; faculty offices; and the Brodie Laboratory for Craniofacial Genetics.

The goal of the externship is to provide to the Pre-Doctoral Dental Students and Dentist, an opportunity to observe Orthodontics resident function within the residency program. Participants will to be able to see the day-to-day interaction of resident within a program.

Program Length and Schedule

  • The in-person externship program is offered every year between June and September.
  • Accepted students will be assigned to one of the weeks between June and September.
  • In-person externships are for a maximum of three days. A three consecutive-day commitment is expected during the student’s assigned week.
  • There are no externs during holidays, clinic closures, or reduced service days.

The Externship program will re-open starting May 2024. Our admission portal is now open for both domestic and international applicants. Application will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Follow the respective links the appropriate application below.

For all applicants, in order to complete the application form, you will need to upload following documents:

  1. A copy of your Curriculum Vitae
  2. A copy of your dental school transcript (can be official or unofficial)
  3. A letter of recommendation from a Dental School faculty or administrator

Upon submission of the completed application, the application form and the associated documents will be reviewed by the Orthodontic Department’s Externship Program Director. Selected applicants will be invited to apply for the 3-day externship. Due to high demand, not all applicants will be selected to participate.

Department of Orthodontics will contact the selected applicant to discuss  dates and provide additional instructions for specific consent and immunization forms. This process must be completed and approved by the Office of Clinical Affairs BEFORE beginning the externship.

Please Note: Selection criteria for the Orthodontics’ Advanced Specialty Program is completely different from the selection criteria for the Orthodontics Externship program.

Note for International Applicants:

This program does NOT process F1 visa or provide E20 form or any visa supplemental for the participants to be on the Externship.  Likewise, the program also does not grant certification nor pay any travel and insurance expenses. The program is voluntary for participating students or dental professionals.
