Prevention and Public Health News UIC Launches Innovative Antibiotic Stewardship Program in Dentistry Antimicrobial resistance is an increasingly serious health threat. Dentists, it turns out, have an important part to play in solving this problem. UIC clinicians and researchers are leading the way through an innovative antibiotic stewardship program that has resulted in a significant reduction in the amount of antibiotics prescribed at the College of Dentistry. Rotations in Guatemala: Students Making A Big Difference in a Small Country Several dental students at UIC have expanded their horizons through international rotations offered at UIC. Here are experiences shared by three students who recently served patients in the rural highlands of Guatemala. International College of Dentists provides grant for extramural rotations at College of Dentistry The UIC College of Dentistry recently received a grant from the International College of Dentists (ICD) to support travel expenses of seven students to perform extramural rotations at Salud y Paz in Guatemala or Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Dr. Patrick Smith earns AAPHD Grant Dr. Patrick Smith, clinical assistant professor, Division of Prevention and Public Health Sciences and the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, has earned a grant from the American Association of Public Health Dentistry Foundation for his proposal, “Understanding community engagement in low-income, predominantly black communities to promote oral health.” Give Kids a Smile Day: Introducing Mr. Molar and Clark the Cub! College of Dentistry Professor Selected to Help Lead Global Forum A UIC professor and associate dean has been appointed as co-chair of the Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education. ICD Provides Gift to Help Fund International Rotations The International College of Dentists recently provided a gift of over $2,400 to help fund the College’s international service learning rotations. Dr. Patrick Smith Joins College Full-Time with Focus on Underserved Dr. Patrick Smith has joined the Division of Prevention and Public Health Sciences and the Department of Pediatric Dentistry as Clinical Assistant Professor. Students Provide Much Needed Dental Care for Adolescents with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Students at UIC College of Dentistry receive the training necessary to provide much needed oral health care to our intellectual and developmental disabled neighbors.
