University of Illinois at Chicago Honors Dr. Daniel Laskin

Dr. Daniel M. Laskin, who earned his MS in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, along with two other outstanding UIC alumni, were honored by the University during the UIC Alumni Awards Luncheon.

Dr. Laskin was honored with the Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Howard Kaufman (BA ’82, Liberal Arts and Sciences) and Jean Ragalie-Carr (BS ’83, Applied Health Sciences) received the Alumni Achievement Award.

Dr. Laskin is a world-renowned researcher in the field of craniofacial growth, temporomandibular joint problems, and connective tissue physiology and pathology. He was one of the founders along with Dr. Bernard G. Sarnat, ’40, MS Histology ’40, of the modern Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the College and served as Department Head, and he helped the department achieve international acclaim.

“I always loved the challenge of working with oral and maxillofacial residents — and watching them grow into competent professionals,” Dr. Laskin said.

Dr. Kaufman is a leader in cancer immunology and a world-renowned melanoma specialist. He developed two Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs to treat cancer and serves as the president of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer.

Ragalie-Carr is an innovator in the discipline of childhood health. Her efforts have helped establish programs such as the National Dairy Council and National Football League-affiliated “Fuel Up to Play 60.” She also played an integral role in developing programs for former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let Move” campaign.

Dr. Laskin recently made a generous gift to create the Dr. Daniel M. Laskin Faculty Fund in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as a precursor to an endowed professorship named for Dr. Laskin in the department. The College is actively seeking additional donations for the current Laskin Faculty Fund so that it can enhance the value, and the impact, of the future Dr. Daniel M. Laskin Endowed Professorship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
