University Honors Dr. Dale Nickelsen with Winter Award
Dale Nickelsen, DDS, of Elgin, IL, an alumnus of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, longtime faculty member in the College’s Department of Pediatric Dentistry, former Supervisor of the Postgraduate Pedodontic (Pediatric Dentistry) Clinic, and former Interim Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs, received the University of Illinois Foundation’s William E. Winter Award for Outstanding Advocate Leadership from University President Timothy L. Killeen.
Dr. Nickelsen was presented his award at the Evening with Legacies and Leaders dinner, a UIC event that honors donors and volunteers, held on April 7, 2016.
“I am truly honored to be this year’s recipient of the William Winter Award,” Dr. Nickelsen said at the event. “Being an advocate for our University has been one of my most meaningful as well as challenging activities.
“It has been my privilege to champion the dental college,” he continued. “It is a recognized, world-class, top-of-the-profession institution.”
The Winter Award recognizes individuals who play an active role in securing private support for the University. The award is named for the late William E. Winter, a former CEO of the 7-UP Company and a longtime University of Illinois Foundation board member.
The Nickelsen Pediatric Dentistry Postgraduate Clinic in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry is named for Dr. Nickelsen and his wife, Caren.
“Caren and I have witnessed, first-hand, what can be accomplished through philanthropy when the newly reconstructed postgraduate pediatric dentistry clinic, named in our honor, was dedicated,” Dr. Nickelsen said, noting that the clinic “will significantly improve patient treatment and the education of our pediatric dental specialists.”
Dr. Nickelsen is the second Winter Award recipient from the College of Dentistry. The late Dr. George J. Kottemann, ’55, Orthodontics ’59, received the award in 1998.
