UIC College of Dentistry Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) Hosts Regional Conference

The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry’s Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) chapter hosted the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) Student Regional Conference on Sept. 8.

“We gathered over 70 dental students from all over the nation including Boston, Los Angeles and even Puerto Rico,” said HSDA’s Veronica Ramirez, a dental student.

The conference theme was innovations in dentistry.

UIC College of Dentistry faculty presenters were Dr. Aristotelis Marinis, Clinical Assistant Professor, Restorative Dentistry; Dr. Andrea Reale, Restorative Dentistry faculty member; and Dr. Jasjot Sahni, Clinical Assistant Professor, Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences. Their topics included implant and final crown placement in one appointment, zirconia vs. lithium disilicate crowns, and the role of orofacial pain in dentistry.

The day continued with a leadership development program presented by HDA Vice President Dr. Paula Vogel, in which students had a chance to discuss challenges in dental school with students from different schools.

To wrap up the day, the HSDA hosted a reception at the Chicago Marriott at the Medical District Marriott where 25 students, including HSDA's social chair Nick Flores, were awarded scholarships on behalf of the HDA and other donors.

“Many thanks to everyone who participated and helped make the event such a great success,” Ramirez concluded.
