Recent Grad Dr. Joe Powers Joins College of Dentistry Faculty

He earned his DMD from the UIC College of Dentistry in May, and Dr. Joseph Powers has decided to stay on, joining the faculty as a Clinical Instructor in Restorative Dentistry.

Dr. Powers’s top responsibility is the pre-clinical course with first-year dental students, “teaching them dental anatomy—wax-ups—occlusion, and the various procedures that a general dentist will perform,” he explained. “Currently, my students are learning how to do Class III/IV preps and restorations.”

Originally, Dr. Powers wanted to be a teacher and went to college to become an educator.

“While my path has obviously changed, I still have the desire to take something that I am fascinated with and love—dentistry—and pass on that passion to new students just embarking on this educational journey,” he explained. “I hope to show first-year students that if they take pride in their work, they can achieve great results.”

When not working, the Old Town resident enjoys bicycle rides on the lake, working out, yoga, and Flywheel competitive spin classes. “I also love improv theater and standup comedy and attend as many shows as possible around the city,” Dr. Powers said. “Connected with that, I also really enjoy Chicago’s amazing art scene and am always looking for galleries and art walks.”

He also enjoys travel, having just returned from a trip to Italy and Spain, and cooking. “I host many dinners at my house, where I can use my friends as guinea pigs for my recipes,” Dr. Powers concluded, laughing.

Dr. Powers also is in private practice at Bosack Dental in Orland Park, IL.
