UIC's 2nd Virtual Pain and Sleep Symposium

August 20th, 2021 - The UIC College of Dentistry’s Orthodontics and Oral Medicine departments successfully hosted the 2nd Virtual Pain and Sleep Symposium on Friday, August 20th, 2021. Dr. Dean Terri Weaver (Dean, UIC College of Nursing) and Dr. Ken Kromash (Director, Dental Anesthesia Program at Masonic) presented as the keynote speakers for this event. Dr. Michael Han (Assistant Professor and Residency Program Director, UIC College of Dentistry) was invited as guest speaker to present at the event.

This Symposium aimed to educate health and dental professionals on the current information available on sleep and pain. Specifically, speakers discussed the public health concern that is sleep apnea and treatments beyond CPAP. Speakers also touched on the benefits of bridging the gap between dental and medical experts when it comes to dental sleep medicine and orofacial pain treatment.

The 2nd Pain and Sleep Symposium attracted around 200 participants from all over the globe to attend virtually. It made a global impact for UIC and for the Department of Orthodontics and Department of Oral Medicine.

This year we had attendees from almost all continents:
Asia (Azerbaijan, India, Indonesia, Israel, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, and Saudi Arabia);
Africa (South Africa);
Europe (Germany, Portugal, and Turkey);
North America (US and Canada);
South America (Brazil).

Organized by Dr. Maria Therese Galang-Boquiren and Dr. Dr. Jasjot Sahni, the event was hosted virtual using Zoom video conferencing.  The UIC College of Dentistry designates this activity for two CE credits.
