Honoring Dr. Arshad Mohammed

Honoring Dr. Arshad Mohammed

In honor of of tragic pass of Dr. Arshad Mohammed (1987 - 2019), who was a 2018 graduate of our College’s DMD Advanced Standing program and a first-year resident at the UIC Orthodontic Speciality program, Dr. Stanford Clark, the Dean of the UIC College of Dentistry, invites the College of Dentistry community to participate in one, or both fundraising efforts that will keep Arshad’s memory burning brightly here at UIC.

We also are coming together as faculty, residents and students, staff, and alumni and friends to seek donations for the following:

  • Creation of the Dr. Arshad Mohammed Scholarship in Orthodontic: Our goal is to reach the prerequisite level of $25,000 to create a named scholarship fund through the University of Illinois Foundation. By reaching this level, we will able to establish a named endowment fund in perpetuity in Arshad’s name. We will have five years to reach our goal, but please help us raise as much as we can over the next several months to build momentum for this effort. If we do not reach our goal of $25,000, we will create a current-use scholarship and award an annual scholarship in Arshad’s name for as long as we have funds available. The recipient of the scholarship will be a resident of our Orthodontic program.

  • Naming of a Group Practice Clinical Operatory: The College would like to name an operatory in one of our Group Practice Clinics to recognize Arshad’s excellent work in the DMD program. A plaque, bearing Arshad’s name, will adorn one of the operatories. Our goal is to raise $25,000 to name the operatory for Arshad. A generous anonymous donor, has agreed to match dollar for dollar up to $10,000 for all gifts to the Group Practice Clinic Renovation Fund in Arshad’s name by June 30.

Thank you for taking time to learn more about how we would like to honor the life of Dr. Arshad Mohammed. When tragedies such as these occur, we realize how very fragile life is.  May we find comfort in the knowledge that the Department of Orthodontics and the College of Dentistry have come together in a unified way to support one another in this time of grief and sadness.

Dr. Arshad Mohammed died in a tragic auto accident on the evening of March 28 at the age of 32 years old. He was extremely well-liked by everyone here at UIC. Last spring, prior to Commencement, Arshad received the Dr. Alan C. Peterson Scholarship. The scholarship is named for the late Dr. Alan C. Peterson, who graduated from the College in 1973. The criteria for the scholarship call for the recipient to exemplify compassion, dedication, and excellence in a clinical setting.  We believe that everyone who knew Arshad would agree that he fulfilled these qualities and showed compassion and respect for his patients, fellow students and residents, faculty, staff, administrators, and friends.

Arshad’s passing has been very painful for everyone who knew him. We can only imagine the thousands of lives he would have touched as a healing member of the dental profession.
