Drs. Amanda Nikho and Lauren Mills' original research project accepted at the IEEE/CVF Conference 2025

Congratulations to Drs. Amanda Nikho and Lauren Mills on a remarkable accomplishment! Their original research project, “Knowledge Distillation Approach for SOS Fusion Staging: Towards Fully Automated Skeletal Maturity Assessment,” has been accepted for oral presentation and publication at the IEEE/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) 2025 Workshop, one of the most prestigious international conferences in artificial intelligence and computer vision. The event will take place June 10–17, 2025, in Nashville, Tennessee.
This cutting-edge project introduces a novel deep learning framework for the automated staging of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis (SOS) to assist in skeletal maturity assessment. The work reflects the power of interdisciplinary collaboration, combining expertise from dentistry and engineering.
This research was conducted as a collaborative effort between the UIC College of Dentistry and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Dr. Amanda Nikho will co-present the work with Omid, a PhD student in ECE. The project was mentored by Dr. Mohammed Elnagar and Prof. Ahmet Cetin, and funded by the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF).
We are incredibly proud of Dr. Amanda Nikho and Dr. Lauren Mills for their hard work and innovation. We look forward to seeing their continued impact at the intersection of AI and oral healthcare.
