Dr. Philip Patston accepts role of Associate Dean of Academic Affairs

Dr. Philip Patston has accepted the role of associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry, effective August 18.

Dr. Patston has been a highly regarded faculty member of our college since he joined in 1995 as a visiting assistant professor in the department of oral medicine and diagnostic sciences. He earned his D.Phil. in biochemistry from Oxford University in the UK and was a research fellow at Vanderbilt University before coming to Chicago.

Serving as course director for biochemistry and DBCS for over 14 years, he also was integral to the reorganization of the DMD curriculum, supporting case-based learning in small group formats. Dr. Patston was a key member of the college’s CODA accreditation steering committee in 2021, which led the college to an excellent accreditation outcome. His extensive service to the OMDS department, college, and university includes a leadership role as the chair of the University Senate Executive Committee. He has completed leadership training with ADEA and is the recipient of a Golden Apple Award as well as the prestigious Jon Daniel Award in recognition of his teaching excellence.

Dr. Patston has authored or co-authored over 50 articles and 41 abstracts in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of biochemistry, curriculum restructuring, case-writing, and maximizing the potential of clinical teachers.

A little over a year ago Dr. Patston accepted the role of interim academic dean. During his time in the interim position, he has worked tirelessly with the curriculum committee, demonstrating exceptional dedication and inspirational leadership. Additionally, Dr. Patston has accomplished a great deal in the areas of student promotion processes and tutoring in support of student success initiatives.

We are excited about the leadership and vision Dr. Patston will bring to his new role as academic dean and look forward to continued excellence under his guidance.
