About
Dr. Patston studied biochemistry at the University of Bristol, and received his doctorate in biochemistry at the University of Oxford. He did postdoctoral work at Vanderbilt University, before moving to UIC. The central theme of his research has been enzyme regulation by phosphorylation and by limited proteolysis. In particular, he has studied regulation of plasma proteases by inhibitors of the SERPIN family. He also has served on many committees in the COD, at UIC, and the parent University of Illinois system. He was chair of the UIC Senate where he was an advocate of open and transparent governance, and for closer dialogue between faculty and administration in the spirit of shared governance. Currently for UIC he serves on the VCHA Health Professions Task Force, and the Interprofessional Education Steering Committee. In the COD he is on the Curriculum Committee, and the Accreditation Steering Committee. For many years he has been involved in curriculum development in the college, and helped initiate the small group learning systems based biomedical science curriculum we have now. He mostly teaches in the D1 year, and is a small group learning facilitator.
