Introduction
The University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry Mile Square Health Center Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Program is a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) approved residency. This 12-month program integrates didactic instruction and clinical training and awards a Certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry upon successful completion.
The program was jointly developed by the UIC College of Dentistry (COD) and the Mile Square Health Center (MSHC) to support advanced dental education and patient care in a community setting. The program accepts three residents each year.
All clinical training, along with selected didactic lectures, takes place at four Mile Square Health Center clinic sites: Auburn Gresham, Back of the Yards, Rockford and South Shore. Didactic instruction will be held at the UIC College of Dentistry.
Residents also participate in interdisciplinary rotations with non‑dental specialties, including Behavioral Health, Family Medicine and Pediatrics, within the shared clinical spaces of their assigned MSHC sites. Didactic content is primarily taught by COD program directors and faculty from the following specialty programs: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Endodontics.
The collaboration of UIC College of Dentistry and Mile Square Health Center provides a synergistic approach to advanced training in general dentistry. By combining UIC COD’s innovative and comprehensive academic programming with MSHC’s interdisciplinary, community‑focused healthcare model, the program offers a unique opportunity for residents to expand their clinical experience, strengthen their skills and build confidence beyond predoctoral education.
Program Goals and Objectives
UIC COD MSHC Advanced Education in General Dentistry overall program goals and objectives are:
- To demonstrate evidence of value-added knowledge in all phases of dentistry
- To enhance the resident’s ability to act as the coordinator of the patient’s total oral health care
- To educate the resident in providing a comprehensive range of dental services to diverse patient groups, including medically-compromised, disabled, pediatric, and geriatric populations
- To develop lifelong learners in dentistry who can review the dental literature and use it to provide evidence-based up-to-date clinical care
- To provide opportunities for service in community dentistry projects and to provide dental treatments to underserved populations in the region.
- To educate the resident in providing dental treatment in an interdisciplinary setting
Clinical Training Locations
Educational Program & Location
The program will provide clinical and didactic training to ensure that upon completion of the program, residents will be able to act as a primary oral health care provider to include:
- Providing emergency and multidisciplinary comprehensive oral health care
- Obtaining informed consent
- Functioning effectively within interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including consultation and referral
- Providing patient-focused care that is coordinated by the general practitioner directing health promotion and disease prevention activities
Residents will learn how to manage medical emergencies, implants, oral mucosal diseases, temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. Residents will also further develop their skills to assess, diagnose and plan for the provision of multidisciplinary oral health care for a wide variety of patients including patients with special needs.
A majority of the didactic instruction will be held at the UIC College of Dentistry.
Admission Eligibility
Eligible applicants to advanced education programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation must be graduates from:
- Pre-doctoral dental programs in the U.S. accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (DMD or DDS); or,
- Pre-doctoral dental programs in Canada accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada.
