UIC Dentistry Researchers Receive Award for Implant Innovation

UIC Dentistry Researchers Receive Award for Implant Innovation

Drs. Lyndon Cooper (Professor and Head, Oral Biology) and Xiaofeng (Charles) Zhou (Professor, Periodontics) recently received the 2017 IADR Academy of Osseointegration Innovation in Implant Sciences Award, presented by the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). They were recognized at the Opening Ceremonies of the 95th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, Wednesday, March 22, 2017, in San Francisco.

Dr. Cooper and Dr. Zhou were selected for this award for their research entitled “Epithelial (dys)function in Peri-implantitis.” This study will further describe the molecular pathogenesis of the chronic peri-implantitis lesion and will provide a first characterization of the junctional epithelium in healthy and diseased peri-implant tissues. It is intended to close some of the gaps in knowledge and will aid in developing future, rational approaches to its management.

This project involving peri-implantitis will continue advances in implant research that can be applied in clinical practice and be used to maintain and improve oral health and quality of life.

Supported by the Academy of Osseointegration, this is the seventh year of the Implant Sciences Award, which is intended to help investigators pursue innovation and novel research in oral care that involves, but is not limited to, dental implant therapy. Cooper and Zhou will receive an award of up to $75,000.
