UIC College of Dentistry hosts Urban Health Program Dental Camp to inspire future dentists
UHP Dental Camp
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry hosted its Urban Health Program (UHP) Dental Camp on Aug. 4–8, a weeklong program designed to introduce Chicago-area high school students (grades 9–12) from educationally or economically disadvantaged backgrounds to the dental profession.
Through lectures, hands-on laboratory activities, clinical observation, and mentoring, students gained exposure to dental and scientific principles, as well as technological applications that are shaping the field. The program provided participants with a deeper understanding of the role of dentists and the wide range of procedures they perform.
“The camp provides an opportunity for us to showcase our college, especially our educational and clinical technology,” said Dr. Darryl Pendleton, associate dean of student and diversity affairs at the college and executive director of the UHP program. “Every year, the committed efforts of our college’s students, faculty and staff contribute to the success of the camp. Our goal is to increase the high school students’ awareness of dental careers.”
The UHP Dental Camp reflects the college’s broader commitment to expanding pathways into the dental profession and increasing access within the field. By fostering awareness and enthusiasm at the high school level, the program seeks to build a stronger, more inclusive pipeline of future oral healthcare professionals.
