UIC College of Dentistry hosts Urban Health Program Dental Camp, creating pathways for future dentists
Introduction
The University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry hosted its Urban Health Program (UHP) Dental Camps on Aug. 17-21, a weeklong program designed for Chicago-area high school students in grades 9 through 12 from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in dentistry, science and health care careers.
Through immersive experiences, including hands-on laboratory and clinical activities, students explored scientific principles, technological advances and clinical practices that shape modern dentistry. The program provided participants with a deeper understanding of the dental profession and its many specialties while introducing them to educational and career pathways in oral healthcare.
“This is our fourth year hosting the camp, and each year it gets bigger and better,” said Dr. Darryl Pendleton, associate dean of student and diversity affairs at the College of Dentistry and executive director of the UHP program. “A special thank you to Dr. Lawerence White and Braulia Espinosa for their leadership coordinating the event. The contributions of our faculty, staff and students made this year's camp memorable for all.”
“The Dental Camp introduces high school students to a world of exciting possibilities in dentistry, from specialty programs and digital dentistry to public health initiatives and practice management,” said Braulia Espinosa, senior director of student affairs and acting director of the Dentistry Urban Health Program. “Through mentorship with our faculty and students, participants gain inspiration and guidance to pursue dentistry. The program has been a successful initiative that has encouraged enrollment at UIC and participation in our pathway programs.”
The UHP Dental Camp is part of the college’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to careers in oral health through excellence in dental education and mentorship. By connecting students with dental professionals and providing real-world learning opportunities, the program helps spark curiosity, build confidence and broaden awareness of careers in dentistry. The program aims to inspire the next generation of dental professionals and support a more diverse workforce that better reflects and serves the communities of Illinois.
