Innovation in Orthodontics: Dr. Phimon Atsawasuwan and the future of Smart Retainers

The groundbreaking research led by Dr. Phimon Atsawasuwan, in collaboration with Dr. Yang Zhao at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, is redefining the future of orthodontic care through the development of Smart Retainers. Recently spotlighted in The Daily Illini, this innovative project marks a significant advancement in the integration of dental science and digital health technology.

Smart Retainers capture real-time data on wear duration and patients’ parafunctional habits, eliminating the need to rely on subjective recall and giving clinicians and patients access to accurate, actionable insights. This data-driven feedback loop helps prevent tooth relapse and closely monitors behaviors that may compromise treatment outcomes, ultimately safeguarding a patient’s long-term investment in their smile.
