Drs. Amanda Nikho and Lauren Mills who were awarded the “Broadening Participation Scholarship” and “Travel Grant”

Congratulations to Drs. Amanda Nikho and Lauren Mills who were awarded the “Broadening Participation Scholarship” and “Travel Grant” for their work titled “Knowledge Distillation Approach for SOS Fusion Staging: Towards Fully Automated Skeletal Maturity Assessment”. This will be presented on June 12th at the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference. This is a wonderful achievement!

This cutting-edge project by Drs. Amanda Nikho and Lauren Mills introduces a novel deep learning framework for the automated staging of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis (SOS) to assist in skeletal maturity assessment. The work reflects the power of interdisciplinary collaboration, combining expertise from dentistry and engineering. This research was conducted as a collaborative effort between the UIC College of Dentistry and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). The project was mentored by Dr. Mohammed Elnagar and Prof. Ahmet Cetin.

We are incredibly proud of Dr. Amanda Nikho and Dr. Lauren Mills for their hard work and innovation. We look forward to seeing their continued impact at the intersection of AI and oral healthcare.
