Chapter 7: Why Does Course Climate Matter for Student Learning?

This year we will read and discuss How Learning Works: 8 Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching (2nd edition) by Lovett, Marsha C.; Bridges, Michael W.; DiPietro, Michele; Ambrose, Susan A.; Norman, Marie K. (2023). This book focuses on learning from failure and fostering environments where people feel safe to acknowledge mistakes and see these as opportunities for growth.  The book will be available electronically through the library and a link will be provided. If you would like Faculty Affairs to provide you with a hard copy of the book please contact Jill Glascott (jillg@uic.edu).

Goal of the UIC COD Faculty Development Book Club:  The goal of this activity is to create a conversation around contemporary issues in education and to enhance motivation for continuous personal and professional development around the delivery of education (pedagogy) and its role in the creation of a learner-centered educational system.

  • Discuss how course climate contributes to student sense of belonging
  • Explore the ways in which feelings of belonging impact student learning
  • Identify strategies for fostering student belonging in the learning environments
