Adrian Buganza-Tepole is the principal investigator of the Buganza Lab, who's research vision is the development of predictive computational tools to increase our basic understanding of mechanobiological adaptation and soft matter mechanics, and to apply these tools in relevant clinical settings. These include but are not limited to tissue expansion, wound healing, and reconstructive surgery. Additionally, modeling and simulation of biological systems requires suitable numerical methods. For instance, we are interested in the development of new thin shell, multifield, and multiscale finite element formulations. research focuses on computational models of soft tissue biomechanics.

UIC is a Leader in Regenerative Sciences Research

Moving beyond tissue replacement, using materials to enable our bodies to regenerate damaged and failing tissues.

renegerative-science.JPG

We are leading investigations into how materials interact with living tissues, and the building of tissue replacements for the growth of cells/tissues to replace lost tissues. The Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration (CWHTR) is a unique community of scientists and clinicians devoted to the study of injury, wound healing, and regeneration. The Laboratory of Applied Dental Biomaterials and Interfaces is a NIH funded center studying the properties of the tooth in order to develop reparative/regenerative biomaterials to replace lost tooth structure.

Addressing the Opioid Crisis Facing Dentistry
Jul 19
July 19, 2019 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM
UIC College of Dentistry

Join us for a special seminar on addressing the opioid crisis facing dentistry. Dr. Jasjot Sahni, Diplomate of American Board of Orofacial Pain and Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor in Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences  will present on the topic of the Opioid Crisis on Friday, July 19th at 12:30 in Lecture Hall North.

The impact of the opioid epidemic has been felt in communities in all 50 U.S. states. Curbing the epidemic’s exponential trajectory requires special attention from dental educators. Academic dental institutions are using a variety of methods to mitigate substance misuse, including curriculum and clinical protocol changes. Dental educators are key to teaching best practices in prescribing to the next generation of practicing dentists.

In 2016, more than 42,000 deaths were attributed to substance overdose related to opioids. More than 11.5 million Americans misused prescription pain relievers, such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, heroin, and fentanyl, and opioid overdose-related death continue to soar. According to the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, the opioid epidemic has resulted in an economic burden of $504 billion, or 2.8% of the U.S. gross domestic product.
