The goal of the externship is to provide interested pre-doctoral dental students or general dentists the opportunity to observe Pediatric Dental residents function within the residency program. The externship is intended for individuals who plan to apply to the residency in the upcoming or current application cycle.
Participants will to be able to see the day-to-day interactions of residents and also evaluate their own compatibility with our residency program.
Externships are three full days in length. Applicants may select either the Monday-Wednesday or Wednesday-Friday option. Up to two (2) externs can participate in a specific week.
Due to high demand, the program is not able to accommodate requests for modified or extended schedules (alternative days or additional observation days). Individuals wishing to spend more than 3 days with the program are encouraged to consider the “Visiting Dentist Non-Degree Program page.”
Time of year
Available externship dates are based on the residents’ calendar. Externships are not available during major holidays, around graduation/orientation, or on dates when there is reduced clinic.
• Attend classes and lectures with first and second-year residents
• Participate in clinic and hospital rotations
• Rotate in the graduate pediatric clinic
• Observe General Anesthesia cases in the hospital (Monday or Friday)
Due to liability restrictions, the externship is observation only. Externs do not participate in after-hours call.
Upon approval of the Program Director for the proposed period of the Externship, specific consent and immunization forms need to be completed prior to the visit.
Please contact Jean O'Finn for application instructions.
Prior to the externship, the Chief Resident provides individuals with details about the externship, such as directions, arrival time, a tentative schedule, etc.
