UIC College of Dentistry Maria’s Shelter Health Fair in Chicago
Maria Shelter Health Fair

The College is pleased to announce an event at Maria Shelter on July 22 from 12 pm to 2 pm. Maria Shelter Clinic is a free clinic provided by students and faculty of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. The clinic operates bi-weekly within a homeless shelter in the Englewood neighborhood, where they serve women and children.

Volunteers from the UIC College of Dentistry will be providing oral health education for the shelter’s residents including children and parents and oral screening for the children with proper referrals as needed. Dr. Roucka has gracious agreed to supervise the dental students at this event. We are looking for dental students to provide education and assist with screenings. Senior standing students will provide screening services. The remainder of the class can assist with oral health education and assisting with other activities.

About Maria Shelter

The Maria Shelter is a transitional home for homeless women and children located in the Englewood community. Each year, the facility provides food, shelter and programs to promote health and wellness and self-sufficiency for more than 200 women and children.  For many years now, they have co-sponsored the Englewood health fair to bring medical screenings, health education, healthy foods and fun-filled activities to all community members from Englewood and surrounding neighborhoods.  Maria Shelter

Looking for Volunteers

This is a fantastic opportunity for the UIC College of Dentistry to reach out to this community of homeless women and their families and educate their clients about proper oral hygiene. You will have a UIC table set-up to participate in oral health education activities, some examples include, oral hygiene demonstrations, games, handing out toothbrushes, etc. There will be approximately 100 women and children from the community.
