  • Dr. Kasang Promotes Dentistry to Umoja Students

  • Dr. Suzanne Kasang, Clinical Assistant Professor, Restorative Dentistry, was one of 120 businesspeople from the Chicago area to participate in the third annual Umoja Training to Transitions Career Day at Manley High School in Chicago's Lawndale community Oct. 12. Approximately 200 students attended.
  • The Umoja Student Development Corp. is a non-profit agency that provides real-world projects blending work experience, community service, and leadership development to high school students, and helps them deal with academic and personal challenges. "Umoja" is Swahili for "Unity."
  • "In the ten years Umoja has been at Manley, the school's graduation rate has improved and more of its graduates enroll in college," Dr. Kasang said.
  • High school juniors and seniors attended sessions where panelists spoke of their training and careers and answered student questions about everything from college choices to personal struggles.
  • Dr. Kasang had literature from the College's Office of Admissions and Hygiene Program, as well as College of Dentistry toothbrushes and pencils provided by Dr. Darryl Pendleton, Associate Dean for Student and Diversity Affairs. She also spoke to the students about dental assisting and dental laboratory technology as career options.
  • After the panel presentations, Dr. Kasang and the other volunteers interviewed the students and reviewed their resumes to provide valuable interview experience and individual feedback.
