  • College Hosts Inaugural CelebrAsian Week

  • The UIC College of Dentistry, through its Diversity Advisory Committee and Office of Student and Diversity Affairs, held its inaugural CelebrAsian Week recently.
  • The committee, in its fourth year, had highlighted “a number of other populations previously, so it decided to do a week-long celebration of our Asian population here in the College, and of Asian culture and healthcare, around the time of the traditional Chinese New Year,” said Dr. Darryl Pendleton, Associate Dean for Student and Diversity Affairs.
  • Other groups that participated included the College’s Chinese American Student Dental Association (CASDA), Korean American Student Dental Association (KASDA), and the South Asian Student Dental Association. “A number of faculty and staff also helped out,” Dr. Pendleton noted, giving particular credit to Holly Bunton, Khatija Noorullah, Dr. Larry Salzmann, and Dr. Jin-Moon Soh.
  • Outside organizations that helped provide resources for the event were the UIC Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Asian Americans, Chicago’s Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Chicago, the Korean Tourism Organization in Chicago, Goldman Dental Products Inc., and the Lotte Confectionery Co.
  • CASDA, for example, on one day, “had a fundraiser/food and novelties sale and a poster presentation on Chinese health issues,” Dr. Pendleton noted.
  • Dr. Yihyun Kwon from the National University of Health Sciences spoke on “Acupuncture Treatment for Facial Conditions” on another day.
  • On the last day, after a welcome by KASDA President Rohit Dave, a student of Korean and Asian Indian heritage, KASDA “sold traditional Korean foods jap jae, fried dumplings, and gimbap,” Dr. Soh noted. Pre-dental student Angela Suh, who hopes to enter the College in 2012, sang Arirang, a popular Korean folk song.
  • “Many posters of Korea, as well as a short video and PowerPoint clip allowed students and staff to better immerse themselves in Korean culture,” Dr. Soh concluded.
