The Chicago Dental Society Foundation recently provided a $100,000 installment on a $500,000 endowment to the College to support two junior clinical faculty in their development as dental educators.
-
The College’s two new Chicago Dental Society Foundation Clinical Fellows are Dr. Joel M. Laudenbach, Assistant Professor of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, and Dr. Priscilla Chang, Clinical Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Laudenbach joined the faculty in 2007, and Dr. Chang a year later.
-
At the Dec. 14 College event honoring Drs. Laudenbach and Chang, Dean Bruce Graham said, “Dr. Laudenbach is one of the College’s most active clinical teachers,” noting that Dr. Laudenbach developed a hospital rotation for dental students at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
-
“He was instrumental in the development of the new dental student curriculum,” Dr. Graham continued. Dr. Laudenbach teaches seven courses in the Oral Medicine, Group Practice, and Urgent Care Clinics. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed an Oral Medicine Fellowship, and he completed a General Practice Residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
-
Dr. Graham called Dr. Chang “one of our busiest clinical faculty members, having taught in ten different clinical sciences courses to date. She is a naturally gifted teacher who is highly regarded by our dental students.
-
“We identified Dr. Chang as a future faculty member early on in her dental education because she is an extraordinarily capable individual. As a student, she distinguished herself as a leader and earned many academic and leadership awards,” Dr. Graham said.
-
“Junior talented faculty are, in every sense of the phrase, truly the future of our College,” he continued. “These two Chicago Dental Society Foundation endowed fellowships will provide the financial support that will help Priscilla and Joel to pursue excellence as they develop innovative technology teaching materials and presentations, attend national dental educator teaching development institutes, and do all they can do to become the best teachers they can be.”
-
Dr. Barbara Mousel, Chair of the Chicago Dental Society Foundation, said “Education of our dental students is critical, and state funding is lacking. So we are delighted to contribute to dental education in this manner.”
-
Dr. Chang said, “As a junior faculty member who has recently started an academic career, I am grateful to receive support from CDS. I hope to use this award to enhance my teaching and incorporate more technology into my lessons. I particularly enjoy using video to illustrate procedures and provide a clear, enlarged view of proper technique, instrument use, material handling and positioning. I think video provides students with study aids which can be viewed at their convenience to learn new procedures or to review prior to clinical application.”
-
Dr. Laudenbach said, “Being part of this academic endowment is a privilege, and I plan to put the additional funds to good use to benefit the students. I am involved with many aspects of clinical education at the College and will likely use the funding to help with some of the education opportunities in hospital-based dental education. In the future, these funds may also be applied to educational projects related to Geriatric Dentistry at the College. I am most grateful to the CDS Foundation and to the College for this fellowship.”

More than a dozen Chicago Dental Society and Chicago Dental Society Foundation officials were on hand along with College faculty and staff members to honor Drs. Chang and Laudenbach at the event.
