Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration: Past Events
  • 2010 Symposium

  • The Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration held its 3rd Annual Symposium for Wound Healing Research on May 14, 2010 at the UIC College of Dentistry. The title of this year’s symposium was “Clinical and Scientific Advances in the Treatment of Poorly Healing Wounds” and featured presentations by recognized experts in the field of chronic and poorly healing wounds including Steven Boyce (University of Cincinnati), William Ennis (University of Illinois Chicago), Richard Gamelli (Loyola University), Nicole Gibran (University of Washington), Gayle Gordillo (Ohio State University), and Geoffrey Gurtner (Stanford University). The speakers’ presentations focused on the challenges facing clinicians in treating wounds that are typically resistant to conventional wound treatment modalities, such as diabetic and burn wounds, and considered the latest research findings aimed at developing innovative treatments for these types of wounds, including stem cell therapies and artificial tissue constructs.
  • The meeting was attended by a diverse group of over 100 clinicians, scientists and students from universities and hospitals in the Chicago area and Midwest. A roundtable discussion during the lunch hour provided attendees with the opportunity to meet with the speakers and participate in more in depth discussions.

  • Dr. Geoffrey Gurtner (Stanford University) presented a talk entitled, “Stem and Progenitor Cell Recruitment Following Injury”.

  • Participants at the 2010 Symposium for Wound Healing Research participate in roundtable discussions during the lunch break.
  • CWHTR Wound Healing Roundtable

  • The UIC Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration is hosting its first Wound Healing Research Round Table on Thursday, December 4, 2008 from 11am-1pm. The meeting is open to all who have an interest in the topic of wound healing, whether from a basic science or clinical perspective. The purpose of the Round Table is to bring together interested parties from both UIC campuses and neighboring institutions in order to initiate partnerships, share ideas, and discuss wound healing research and its translation to the clinical setting.
  • The Round Table will be held at the College of Dentistry, 801 S. Paulina St., Room501. A light lunch will be served.
  • Please RSVP to Dr. Wendy Cerny at cernyw@uic.edu by Nov. 14, 2008. Please include your institutional/departmental affiliation, area of interest/research, and any dietary restrictions.
  • Dr. Luisa DiPietro Chairs Gordon Research Conference on Tissue Repair and Regeneration

  • Dr. Luisa DiPietro, Director of the Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration and Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, was selected to chair a recent 2009 Gordon Research Conference, entitled “Tissue Regeneration and Repair” and held June 14 through 19 at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire.
  • The conference was attended by more than 100 scientists, clinicians, and students from the U.S., Canada, and Europe. It was the ninth Gordon Research Conference on that topic; the conference is held every two years. “Many scientists in the field consider it to be the preeminent conference on this topic,” Dr. DiPietro said.
  • The Gordon Conferences are distinguished by their commitment to the presentation of recent unpublished findings at the forefront of a particular field. Dr. DiPietro was responsible for organizing the program and identifying and inviting both distinguished speakers and young investigators to present talks. The week-long program featured sessions on proliferation, inflammation, regeneration, bioengineering, genetics, fibrosis, stressors of healing, and stem cells.
  • “Due to the large number of UIC attendees, the conference allowed us to get outstanding feedback on our research programs in the Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration,” Dr. DiPietro said. “We were also able to make some key contacts with leaders in the fields of repair and regeneration.”
  • The UIC College of Dentistry and the Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration were well represented at the conference by eight members of the College community including faculty, staff, and students: Phillip Marucha, Christopher Engeland, Shujuan Guo, Wendy Cerny, Anna Turabelidze, Stephanie Tymen, and Mat Wietecha. Engeland, Guo, Turabelidze, Tymen, and Wietecha all presented posters highlighting their current research projects in the area of wound healing and repair, and Dr. Marucha chaired a session on “Stressors of Wound Healing.”

  • 2008 Symposium

  • The 1st Annual Symposium for Innovative Wound Healing Research, "Fibrosis and Scarring" was held on May 16, 2008.
  • Over 100 scientists, clinicians and students participated in the day long symposium, which included stimulating research presentations and roundtable discussions. The 2009 Symposium will take place on May 15, 2009. Details will be posted in early 2009.
