The Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration hosted its 2nd Annual Symposium for Wound Healing Research on May 15, 2009. This year’s Symposium was entitled “Epithelium in Health and Disease” and featured four speakers, a luncheon, and roundtable discussions with the presenters. Over seventy participants registered for the event, which was held on the 4th floor of the College of Dentistry.

This years speakers included the following distinguished scientists and clinicians:

Dr. Jackie Bickenbach (University of Iowa; “Keratinocyte Stem Cells”), Dr. Jonathan Jones (Northwestern University; “Keratinocyte Migration”), Dr. Tatiana Oberyszyn (Ohio State University; “Gender Differences in uv-induced Skin Cancer”), and Dr. Gail Hecht (UIC; “Epithelial-Bacterial Interactions”). The speakers gave outstanding presentations about their recent research findings. The roundtable discussion session provided an opportunity for the participants and speakers to engage in further discussions and to exchange ideas about the presentation topics.

Participants in this year’s symposium included faculty and students from UIC, Rush, Northwestern, Loyola, Case Western Reserve, and the Pacific Dental School.

The CWHTR is under the direction of Dr. Luisa DiPietro. The Program Committee for the 2009 Symposium included Drs. Luisa DiPietro, Phil Marucha and Wendy Cerny from the UIC College of Dentistry, and Dr. Thomas Mustoe of Northwestern University.
