Prospective Researchers: Vision Statement:

Richard Warnecke
bulletRichard Warnecke
Dir. of the Program for Cancer Control and Population Sciences
Epidemiology/Behavioral:
The Program for Cancer Control and Population Sciences of the UIC Cancer Center
encompasses the areas of epidemiology, tobacco control, population health and early detection, and survivorship and pain. Shared interested in early detection, tobacco use, quality of life, and health disparities have provided the basis for collaboration among these programs, the Cancer Center, and the UIC-COD.

Tobacco
Currently, UIC has R01 grants in tobacco control and two large programs funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Robin Mermelstein, PhD, of the Psychology Department, is the coordinator of the tobacco programs at the Cancer Center and the PI of a pending P01. She will work with the oral cancer group to develop tobacco programs aimed at persons at high risk of oral cancer.

Population Science and Early Detection
At the UIC Center for Population Health and Health Disparities, a P50 funded by the NCI (PI – Richard Warnecke) focuses on disparities in the stage of diagnosis of breast cancer among Caucasian, African-American and Latino women. Clara Manfredi, PhD, focuses on translational research in community settings; she examines changes in tobacco use among women with low educational levels. Timothy Johnson, PHD, Director of the University’s Survey Research Laboratory, studies the quality of data reported in self-administered questionnaires about early detection. The epidemiology group headed by Faith Davis, PhD, provides case ascertainment and accrual for the research project. She is also an expert in risk factor identification and management of large cohorts.

Survivorship and Pain Management
Carol Ferrans, BSN, PhD, professor of medical and surgical nursing, is funded by a R01 by NCI investigating African-American Cancer Survivors. Her team includes Diana Wilkie, BSN, PhD, whose research focus is pain management and Alicia Matthews, BSN, PhD, who works on tobacco cessation and quality of life issues among African-American and gay and lesbian cancer patients.

Many team members serve on the Cancer Center’s Committee on Oral Cancer. Other strong evidence of collaboration in this field is cooperation between UIC-COD, the Center for Population Health and Health Disparities, Southern Illinois University Dental Hygiene Program at Carbondale, and the Illinois Department of Public Health to develop a statewide strategy to improve the early detection and prevention of oral cancer. The Illinois Department of Public Health has matched funding received from NCI (PI – Richard Warnecke) to bring local health departments into the planning and implementation phases. In this process, the COD will train dentists in state-of-the-art oral cancer examinations and address tobacco and alcohol use as the major risk factors for oral cancer. A network of participating community health centers is being developed.
