Prospective Researchers: Vision Statement:
Cancer Biology:
The basic and translational components of the oral cancer research group are being developed as a new research focus area by the Center for Molecular Biology of Oral Diseases. Cancer Biology researchers at the Center are studying topics such as:
Molecular mechanisms of human papilloma virus (HPV)-induced oral cancer, which accounts for 40% of cancers [Srilata Bagchi];
Molecular mechanisms which produce alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (a particular type of cancer) [Chiayeng Wang];
Antiangiogenic protein and the molecular mechanisms which mediate its antiangiogenic activity (applications to anti-tumor therapy) [Steve Olson];
DNA damage-induced cancers and the mechanisms of DNA damage repair [Guy Adami]; and
Aberrant cellular signaling mechanisms associated with cancerous state [Keiko Watanabe].

Center Associate Professors: Srilata Bagchi and Chiayeng Wang.

Additional opportunities for interdisciplinary research in oral cancer exist based on established interactions between the UIC Cancer Center and other Chicago-based academic medical centers. Given the significant resources of the UIC Cancer Center, its established connections with other nearby medical centers, and the newly forged relationship with COD, the College is uniquely positioned to play a central role in the Cancer Centers new Interdisciplinary Program in Oral Cancer Biology, Detection and Treatment.
Cancer Biology Recruitment:
We are recruiting new basic, translational, and clinical research faculty to establish a critical mass of researchers in this area. Translational research is especially critical to creating an interdisciplinary team that can integrate basic and clinical research in cancer. We need to attract a magnet investigator with a strong track record in translational research as evidenced by a record of close interactions with clinician-scientists, grant funding, and publicaions. A basic researcher in oral cancer who would complement the expertise of existing COD cancer biology researchers is also needed.
