Oral Cancer the Focus of Clinic and Research Day
  • Clinic and Research Day Presentation
  • The 2008 Clinic and Research Day on Feb. 13 afforded students and postgrads and their faculty mentors an opportunity to demonstrate their pathbreaking research. "While the College welcomes all oral healthcare research endeavors, we place particular emphasis on research in biomaterials science, tissue-engineering replacement and repair, soft-tissue wound healing, oral implications of cancers, and salivary markers," noted Dr. Phillip T. Marucha, Associate Dean for Research.
  • With the theme this year of "Putting a Face on Oral Cancer," the scientific program addressed "the important topics of etiology, prevention, detection, and treatment of oral cancer," noted Dr. Ana Bedran-Russo, Assistant Professor, Restorative Dentistry, and Co-Chair of the 2008 Clinic and Research Day. The mini-symposium featured three distinguished speakers who discussed "both treatment and research aspects of oral malignancy," said Dr. Luisa Ann DiPietro, Director of the Center for Wound Repair and Regeneration and Clinic and Research Day Co-Chair.
  • Moderated by Dr. Joel Epstein of the College's Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, the mini-symposium featured Dr. David Reisberg, Medical Director of the Craniofacial Center at UIC; Dr. Sol "Bud" Silverman, Department of Orofacial Sciences, University of California School of Dentistry, San Francisco; and Dr. Xiaofeng (Charles) Zhou, Center for Molecular Biology of Oral Diseases at the College. The keynote speech was by Brian Hill, founder of the Oral Cancer Foundation, and was entitled "The Changing Demographics of the Oral Cancer Population in the U.S."
