Graduate Studies
  • Ph.D. and M.S. training programs are available in conjunction with all units at UIC offering graduate study. Degree candidates enroll in graduate programs in their specific discipline of interest (e.g., Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Physiology and Biophysics, Oral Sciences) and carry out their research under the mentorship and in the laboratories of Center faculty.
  • Ph.D. candidates can expect to spend four years in the program. M.S. candidates will spend approximiately two years. The first year of both programs consists primarily of formal course work. For Ph.D. students, following successful completion of preliminary examinations given by the department in which the student is seeking the degree, candidates then devote the bulk of their effort to research in the mentor's laboratory with participation in journal clubs and seminars. M.S. candidates begin research activities immediately after completion of their formal coursework.
  • Combined professional degree programs are available and are designed for each student individually. An M.D./Ph.D. or D.D.S./Ph.D. program requires about six years for completion.
  • For further information on programs and admissions, please address initial correspondence to the College of Dentistry or appropriate department. For example, candidates interested in Oral Sciences as the main area of concentration should write to the Director of Graduate Studies, College of Dentistry (M/C 621), 801 South Paulina, Chicago, IL 60612-7211.
