The Dental Disaster Medicine Responder and Technology (DMRT) Office, College of Dentistry, is associated with the Emergency Management and Continuity Planning Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, Illinois Medical District (IMD), DuPage County Health Department, and Illinois Department of Public Health, Division of Oral Health. The DMRT Office assists various Illinois state and Federal agencies facilitating dental professional support consistent with the 2013 Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA). DMRT members conduct research and development efforts for national health security. Dental professionals serve in first-responder capacities deploying during a natural disasters, man-made (anthropogenic) disasters, or pandemic events. Dental facilities, clinics, practices, mobile dental vans, and personnel--using mobile and hand-held dental biometric and diagnostic technologies--augment local, state, and federal disaster, pandemic, forensic, and biometric response needs. The dental profession maintains an essential role assisting various investigative agencies and law enforcement when processing missing people and identifying human remains. Dentists employ unique source technologies and diagnostic skill sets during forensic dental, oral, and facial data gathering and analysis. DMRT is supporting the National Institute of Standards and Technology (ANSI-NIST ITL Standard) and the Department of Defense (DoD) to leverage commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)-based, hand-held, directed energy, spectroscopic technologies able to detect and discriminate the dental, oral, and facial biometric data continuum, between well and poorly preserved facial bone, teeth, and ethnomedicines. DMRT is also working to ensure the digital generated dental, oral, and facial data packet, produced by next generation technologies, will maintain secure targeting, acquisition, transmission, and movement, without interference and/or modification of the associated biometric data packet.
