Give Kids A Smile event at the Illinois Center for Rehabilitation and Education

UIC’s College of Dentistry observed Give Kids a Smile Day on February 5, 2014 at the Illinois Center for Rehabilitation and Education-Roosevelt (ICRE). Thirty-two pre-doctoral students, two pediatric dentistry residents and six faculty provided health education, oral health instruction and hygiene services for thirty-one students at ICRE as part of the College’s Give Kids a Smile initiatives. Oral Health Education consisted of booths on brushing, flossing, healthy eating and smoking.

The ICRE experience grew out of a Schweitzer Fellowship project by D-3, Somayeh Jahedi. Ms. Jahedi lobbied for early, real-life experiences for dental students providing oral health education, while simultaneously providing ICRE students with exposure to dental care. The February 5th Give Kids A Smile Event provided preventive care and took x-rays using portable equipment. Ten ICRE students were identified as needing dental treatment; and GKAS plans to return to provide follow-up care on-site in the near future.
