Dr. Knoernschild First Prosthodontist Elected Chair of the Commission on Dental Accreditation

Dr. Kent Knoernschild has become the first prosthodontist to be elected Chair of the Commission on Dental Accreditation.The Chair represents the Commission to the ADA, as well as the dental health care community and the public at large. The Chair also presides at all meetings of the Board of Commissioners, which reviews accreditation recommendations makes accreditation decisions, and sets policy for the Commission."The Commission has broad representation from all areas of dentistry - general dentistry, advanced specialty education, dental allied and dental laboratory groups," said Dr. Knoernschild. "I've gained valuable perspective from collaboration with the commissioners over the last three years, and I'm honored to have been elected by them to serve."The Chair is elected by all commissioners of CODA. The results of the election are forwarded to the ADA House of Delegates, who review the nomination and make final approval. Dr. Knoernschild's term will last for one year, starting at the ADA Annual Meeting in October. Congratulations to Dr. Knoernschild!

Dr. Sukotjo Receives Young Innovator Award

The ACPEF Board of Directors presented the ACP/ACPEF Young Prosthodontist Innovator Award to Cortino Sukotjo, DDS, PhD for his research, In-Vivo Study of Novel Supherhydrophilic Implant Surfaces.

The goal of the award is to advance understanding of prosthodontic-related biological and/or materials systems, human behavior, cost and care of delivery as well as economic modeling and Quality of Life investigations. The scope of research is any area of science that contributes to the understanding of prosthodontic tooth replacement therapies.

Dr. Lee M. Jameson was confirmed President-Elect of the American College of Prosthodontists during the College's 41st Annual Session in Scottsdale, AZ. Dr. Jameson has been in private practice limited to prosthodontics for more than 34 years in Palos Heights, Ill. He earned both his D.D.S. and M.S. degree in prosthodontics from Loyola University in Chicago. Dr. Jameson also holds faculty appointments at the University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Restorative Dentistry and Northwestern University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a member of several other dental organizations including the American Prosthodontic Society, the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics and the American Dental Association.

Implant and Innovations Team Recognized with ADEA/Zimmer Dental Implant Teaching Award

The Implant and Innovations Team was recently recognized with the ADEA/Zimmer Dental Implant Education Teaching Award. The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) awarded the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry’s Dental Implant Educational Team the recipient of the ADEA/Zimmer Dental Implant Education Teaching Award.

The Award is given every two years and recognizes an institution and dental educator team that has demonstrated a commitment to excellence and innovation in the field of implant dentistry education.

The following criteria are used to select the winners of the award:

Dr. Stephen Campbell Receives 2013 Kenneth Wical Award for Excellence in Prosthodontics

Dr. Stephen Campbell was recognized with the ‘2013 Kenneth Wical Award for Excellence in Prosthodontics.’ The ‘Kenneth Wical Award for excellence in Prosthodontics’ is awarded to honor and recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the specialty of prosthodontics. Dr. Campbell was invited to be the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremonies for the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry Advanced Prosthodontics Program. Dr. Campbell is recent past recipient of the ACP Educator of the Year Award and the ACP Dan Gordon Award for lifetime achievement that recognizes individuals who have contributed at the highest level to the welfare and advancement of the specialty of Prosthodontics, dentistry, science, and health professions.

Dr. Stephen Campbell Receives 2013 Jesse T. Bullard Lectureship Award

Dr. Stephen Campbell was recognized with the 2013 Jesse T. Bullard Lectureship Award in Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry. Dr. Campbell was invited to be the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremonies for the Baylor University School of Dentistry Advanced Prosthodontics Program and the alumni meeting that followed. Dr. Campbell is past recipient of the George H. Moulton Achievement Award, the highest honor bestowed by the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics. The Award is granted in recognition of individuals whose outstanding contributions have produced a significant impact on the discipline of fixed prosthodontics.

Dr. Judy Yuan was chosen as recipient of the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics’ Claude R. Baker Teaching Award. This award, presented annually, is made to a junior fixed prosthodontic faculty member of a CODA accredited dental school whose educational efforts are directed toward the education of pre-doctoral students.

Advanced Prosthodontic Students Awarded for Research Efforts

Many of our Advanced Prosthodontic Students are recognized for their research efforts while enrolled in the Program. Here are just a few that have been recognized in the past couple of years:

Dr. Amy Au was recognized with the 2013 IADR PG Student Research Fellowship Award for her project entitled: entitled "Antimicrobial effect of silver embedded titania nanotube (TiO2-NT-Ag.) implant surface against Porphyromonas gingivalis" Dr. Amy Au was also recently recognized with an Academy of Prosthodontics Research Award. These are very special national recognitions.

Dr. Suzie Ahn, was awarded a Tylman Grant from the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics (AAFP). A maximum of four grants are awarded each year, and the AAFP determined that Dr. Ahn was deserving of one of them. Dr. Ahn’s research is entitled “A Comparative Evaluation of Fracture Resistance of One-Piece Milled Chromium Cobalt Post and Cores with Different Post and Core systems: An In-vitro Study.”

Dr. Goth Siu received an American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) Research Grant Award for his project: Improving the pink and white esthetic scores (PES/WES) in predicting patient satisfaction of anterior implant restorations.

Dr. Aram Kim received an American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAI) Research Grant Award for her project: “Objective and subjective comparisons of abutment material effect on peri-implant gingival color and perceived esthetics.”

Dr. Goth Siu was awarded the 2012 Granger-Pruden Award by the Northeast Gnathological Society. He was presented the award at the May 2013 NGS annual session in New York. His mentors are Dr. Cortino Sukotjo and Dr. Judy Yuan. Dr. Goth Siu was also awarded an American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry Grant (AAED). The grant is intended to promote meaningful research in the realm of esthetic dentistry.

Dr. Ana Bedran-Russo became the 2013-2014 President of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Dental Materials Group (DMG) during the gavel ceremony at the business meeting. As president-elect, Dr. Bedran-Russo was the group program Chair of the Dental Materials scientific program for the 2013 IADR Seattle. A year around intensive work with abstract review, interactions with other scientific groups and networks, and symposium and lunch and learning session organization. With over 2000 members, the DMG is the largest IADR scientific group and represents 25% of all the scientific abstracts accepted and presented yearly. Along with the DMG officers (including Dr. Paulo Cesar (photo), Immediate past president), the organization of the scientific and social events for the 2014 AADR Charlotte and 2014 IADR Cape Town (South Africa) are currently underway.

The American College of Prosthodontists has awarded the 2011 ACP Educator of the Year Award to Dr. Kent L. Knoernschild for his outstanding contributions to the welfare and advancement of the College and/or Specialty of Prosthodontics, overall achievement of dentistry and contributions to the sciences and health professions.

Dr. Knoernschild is Program Director for the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Prosthodontics and Co-Director of the Implant and Innovations Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He also holds a private practice limited to prosthodontics. Dr. Knoernschild is the new Director for the American Board of Prosthodontics and was recently elected Vice-Chair of the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation. He has lectured internationally on comprehensive therapy for patients based on best evidence. Dr. Knoernschild has also given over 100 invited presentations nationally and internationally, authored over 50 publications, and received more than 25 research grants supporting clinical and laboratory research.

Prosthodontists are among the most highly trained dentists in the world. Their training requires three additional years beyond a dental degree. These specialists provide implants, dentures, crowns and caps, partial dentures, bridges, tooth whitening and veneers. Prosthodontists also are known for full mouth reconstruction, some of the most complex and challenging cases.

The ACP is the only prosthodontic specialty organization whose membership is based solely on education credentials. ACP members must be in or have completed an ADA-accredited advanced education program in prosthodontics.

UIC College of Dentistry Dental Implant Educational Team Recognized

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) has announced that the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry's Dental Implant Educational Team is the recipient of the 2011 ADEA/Zimmer Dental Implant Education Teaching Award.

The $25,000 Award is given every two years and recognizes an institution and dental educator team that has demonstrated a commitment to excellence and innovation in the field of implant dentistry education.

The award is divided equally between the winning institution and dental educator team. It is intended that the institution's portion of the award be utilized to further advance implant education. The dental educators on the winning team are expected to give a presentation centered on the winning program at the ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition.

Criteria used to select the winners of the award are demonstration of commitment to dental implant education; sustained development of educational programs; innovation in teaching methodology; successful outcomes of teaching efforts; service to the community; and successful integration of educational programs into the established curriculum.

The American College of Prosthodontists presented the 2009 ACP Educator of the Year Award to Dr. Stephen D. Campbell for his outstanding contributions to the welfare and advancement of the College and/or specialty of Prosthodontics, overall achievement of dentistry and contributions to the sciences and health professions.

Dr. Campbell received his D.D.S. from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed an Advanced Program in Prosthodontics at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and a Master of Medical Science Degree with a biomaterials focus at Harvard University in conjunction with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Campbell is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and is active in several dental organizations. He is Past-President of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), American Board of Prosthodontics, Academy of Prosthodontics, American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics and the International Association of Dental Research Prosthodontics Section. Dr. Campbell is President of the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics and serves as Chair of the ACP Education Foundation. Dr. Campbell is Professor and Head of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Director of the Implant and Innovations Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Dr. Rand Harlow Appointed to Illinois State Board of Dentistry

Dr. Rand Harlow was appointed as a new member of the Illinois State Board of Dentistry in November of 2012. The Board is charged with making recommendations to the Director of the Department of Financial & Professional Regulation in establishing guidelines for professional conduct, conducting of formal disciplinary proceedings brought under the Dental Practice Act, and establishing guidelines for qualifications of Illinois dental license applicants. As a Board member, Dr. Harlow will also serve as a Board Examiner for the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners, effective January, 2013.

Dr. Stephen Campbell was featured in a New York Times article on CAD/CAM Dentistry. The story was published in the science section of the New York Times on October 9. The New York Times website and print editions reach nearly 19 million readers.The article stayed on the New York Times Health home page as an Editors Pick for more than 12 weeks. Dr. Campbell shared how prosthodontists use high-tech tools in the dental office and expanded the conversation to include the dental laboratory’s role in using CAD/CAM to make crowns.
