The Brodie Laboratory for Craniofacial Genetics has been established in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry to honor the memory of Allan G. Brodie, preeminent educator and scholar in craniofacial research and clinical orthodontics.

The mission of the Brodie Laboratory for Craniofacial Genetics is to further the science, teaching, and clinical application of the biology of the craniofacial region and the teeth therein.

The logo of the Brodie Laboratory represents the thickening epithelial layer at the onset of craniofacial organogenesis.

Dr. Allan G. Brodie was Dean of the University of Illiniois at Chicago College of Dentistry from 1943 to 1956 and Orthodontics Department Head from 1929 to 1966.

Pictures 1, 2 and 3. These pictures were taken during the opening ceremony for the new Brodie Laboratory for Craniofacial Genetics on May 13th, 2002. Picture 1 has captured the moment right after the ribbon cutting event. Dean Bruce Graham, spouse Barbara Brodie, Department Head Carla Evans, Chancellor Sylvia Manning, and Director Tom Diekwisch applaud donor Don Brodie (from left to right). One of the prominent guests during the opening ceremony was Charles F. Shuler, Director of the Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology in Los Angeles and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Southern California (Picture 2). Picture 3 shows UIC Chancellor Sylvia Manning shaking hands with donors Barbara and Don Brodie.

Pictures 4 and 5 show the unwrapping of a special gift to the art-loving Brodie family: a picture of a tooth in 3D reconstruction with the enamel protein containing areas marked in bright red. The pictures are showing Dr. Diekwisch on the left, Barbara Brodie in the center, and Donald Brodie on the right.

Pictures 6 and 7. The opening ceremony of the Brodie laboratory was a festive and prestigious event. Picture 6 shows Dr. Diekwisch surrounded by guests from Japan, Drs. Tadayoshi Fukui and Akira Yamane, as well as the Nestor of the dental researchers in America, Dr. Arthur Veis from Northwestern University here in Chicago. Orthodontics Department Head Carla Evans, Lab Director Tom Diekwisch, and College of Dentistry Dean Bruce Graham are beaming at the opportunities that have arisen with the establishment of the Brodie Laboratory for Craniofacial Genetics (Picture 7).

Pictures 10 and 11. Before moving into the new facilities of the Brodie Laboratory, we spent almost a year in temporary facilities on the 5th floor (picture 10). Picture 11 shows the new lab a few weeks before the opening. Everything is still in pristine condition…
